A small-town farmer fights developers who want his land.
WHY WE PICKED IT: Poitier’s commanding performance anchors a sweet story about shifting cultural values and judgmental outsiders.
Sidney Poitier is Noah Dearborn, a 91-year-old carpenter who lives contentedly alone in his Georgia farmhouse until a shady real estate developer arrives trying to buy his property and build a shopping mall. When Noah refuses, the developer hires a psychiatrist to declare the aging farmer insane, but instead of having him committed, she finds herself beginning to admire Noah’s simple life.
DIRECTOR: Gregg Champion
