“A woman playing a woman. Where's the trick in that?”
WHY WE PICKED IT: Equal parts bawdy comedy and period drama, this surprising romance hinges on the skillful gender role-playing of Billy Crudup.
In 17th century Britain, women are forbidden on the stage, leaving Edward 'Ned' Kynaston to become the country’s most celebrated leading lady. Until, that is, a fun-loving King Charles II lifts the ban on female performers, and Ned, who is most comfortable playing a women onstage and off, becomes a nonentity overnight, while his ex-dresser, Maria, who has been secretly performing at seed taverns for some time, steps into the spotlight with the help of her former employer.
