Judi Dench and Maggie Smith take in an injured young man.
WHY WE PICKED IT: This wistful little drama hinges on the subtle, nuanced performances of its two inarguably superb leading ladies.
In 1936 England, aging spinster sisters Ursula and Janet Widington are living a quiet existence in a cozy little cottage on the Cornwall coast when they discover a handsome young Polish-Jewish violinist, Andrea, washed ashore, badly injured, and decide to take him in. But Andrea’s presence soon awakens an unfamiliar spark of longing in Ursula while at the same time arousing suspicion and fear among the residents of the village.
