A dying police officer fights for equal rights.
WHY WE PICKED IT: This inspiring documentary intermixes legal drama with personal moments to heartbreakingly humanize a political issue.
Veteran New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester has served her community for 25 years when she is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. But when Laurel attempts to leave her pension to her same-sex life-partner, Stacie – an automatic option for heterosexual married couples – she is summarily denied by her elected officials, known as the Ocean City Freeholders, and must spend the last months of her life fighting to ensure that her longtime love is taken care of when she is gone. A movie based on the documentary, starring Ellen Page and Julianne Moore, was released in 2015.
